Presence of the Catholic Church in Cuba During the Birth of the New Times

Cuba is going through the critical and painful period of the birth of new times.
The church must be present and alive in all historical processes and junctures because it has been an "expert in humanity¨ all through the mileniums. It was present when the evangelizating process started in our continent and in our Land 500 years ago when the world changed its geographic and global concepts.
During the Cuban Eclesial National Gathering (ENEC)* in 1986 the Cuban Church became aware of one thing: that its duty was to be present in the birth of the new times. It was a prophetic feeling .
¨We too, cuban catholics can say, together with our Latin American brothers, ¨that a privileged period of searching for a new synthesis is to come...These new times are not, of course, the same as when the starting synthesis occurred. These are not the times when Latin America was born under the sign of colonization and evangelizing, with its ligths and shadows. But like at that time, this new searching requires a great effort...¨This situation means a very unique challenge to the church. This challenge is not like in normal times. This challenge means to be present during the very birth of the new times.
¨Latin America Today¨. pg. 166), (Cited by ENEC number 484)

We believe that one way of making the Church be present in the birth of the new times is to create a center for education and promotion of the human person.

So, we are to undertake the following tasks:

1. To prepare the laics as free, responsible and critical citizens so they can be present and be active in the renovation of the social, economic and political structures in Cuba. They are to maintain their own christian identity according to the social doctrine of the church and to their own personal vocation.

2.To prepare the laics to have vocations and charismas in order to be protagonists -without hegemonic or exclusive ambitions- in the atmospheres and spaces of Culture, Politics, Economy, Mass Media, Family, Work and among Students. They should perform as leaders and sponsors, without loosing their catholic identity, and they should have a dialogue with the rest of the people.

3.The Catholic Church must contribute to the education of cuban men as free persons. They must be socially mature and have strong criteria. They must be open to solidarity, no matter their religious creed or philosophical orientation .

4.To create spaces for dialogue and democratic participation about the main problems and needs in our country. These pluralist and fraternal spaces should proove that it is possible to build a civil society in which everyone has the opportunity to express and share criteria in a free way and have the opportunity to discuss initiatives and projects for Cuba.

5.Eventually, these spaces for free and pluralist dialogue are to head for
the creation of Life and Participation Communities which will be part of the civil society that will become again different and autonomous from the political structures.( Paul VI, "Octogesima Adveniens" 47)
